Germany’s Tennis sensation Alexander Zverev clinched his maiden ATP title of the season as won the Mexico Open 2021. The lanky German defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final of the tournament in straight sets by 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). In fact, Zverev was down 1-4 in the opening set but made a roaring comeback to win five games on the bounce.
In the second set, Tsitsipas pushed Zverev hard for his win. The set went into the tiebreaker but it was Zverev who came on top in the end. Thus, the 23-year youngster has won his 14th ATP title.
After winning his first title of the 2021 season, Zverev has joined a special company of legendary players like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Dominic Thiem. This for the sixth consecutive year when Zverev has won at least one title since 2016. Zverev had won his maiden ATP title at the 2016 St. Petersburg Open.
Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal has won at least one title in a season for 17 long years between 2004-2020 whereas Novak Djokovic has won at least one title in a season for 16 years from 2006-2021. Dominic Thiem has also done the same for six years between 2016-2021.
Consequently, Zverev has been a consistent performer in the last few years. However, Zverev is yet to win a grand slam title but he is taking steps in the right direction. Zverev had made it to the final of the US Open 2020 but had lost to Dominic Thiem in the final.
On the other hand, Zverev comforted his opponent, Stefanos Tsitsipas as he said, “Stefanos, don’t worry. You will win much bigger tournaments than this one.”
Zverev will aim to continue the good show and there is no doubt that he has shown the skills to go a long way in his career.
