Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev is full of confidence as he gets ready to go into the National Bank Open in Toronto. The World no.2 is keen to overcome the disappointing Olympics campaign.
Medvedev is the number one seed in the tournament. Spanish international Rafael Nadal standing as the second seed opens up the prospect of an exciting final. Medvedev is very much keen to play on the hard court and is anticipating many good results.
Medvedev’s Olympics campaign was halted in the quarter-final where the 25-year old Russian lost in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 against Pablo Carreno Busta.
Medvedev states that he knows his strength and is keen on getting back on hard courts.“I am the top seed, so anything except the final will not be a good result. I want to play good tennis. I know when I play good tennis on hard courts, I am hard to beat. I am keen to win. I know I am capable of beating a lot of guys on hard courts and I know I can win big tournaments. At the same time, everybody plays well, everybody can beat everybody. It is unpredictable, ” says Medvedev.
Medvedev spoke about the difficulties of being consistent and also being the number two seed. “Each week, you are going to play strong opponents who will want to beat you as you are No. 2 in the world. I played quite good tennis at Wimbledon, but being top four in the world, even though it was a tough five-set battle against Hubert Hurkacz, to lose in the fourth round at a Grand Slam was not a good result”, further adds Medvedev.
Though Medvedev is second ranked, he has not been able to win any grand slam so far with being runner-up of Australian Open 2021 as his best result in any grand slam. But the Russian is confident as ever and is ready to give his best shot.
