Jannik Sinner defends Australian Open title, beats Alexander Zverev in straight sets in summit clash

World No.1 Jannik Sinner brought his best to the Rod Laver Arena on Sunday as he bested World No.2 Alexander Zverev in the summit clash of the Australian Open to defend his title. The Italian registered a 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 win against the German to win the third Major of his young career.

Sinner broke Zverev’s serve in the eighth game of the opening set and clinched the opening set in 46 minutes. The second set was like an intense arm wrestle between the two players as both of them held their respective serves to take it to a tiebreaker.

Sinner had a lucky point at 4-4 as the ball ended on Zverev’s side after hitting the net. The Italian took an early break in the third set and completed a comprehensive win.

Sinner gave credit to his team for their unwavering support after winning the title.

“We worked a lot to be in this position and it is an amazing feeling to share this moment with all of you,” Sinner said to his team. “I know a part of the team is at home and my family, but it is amazing to share these feelings with you. I know Darren [Cahill] it is probably your last Australian Open as a coach and I am very, very happy to share this trophy with you. Everything started a little bit when I changed my combination of coaches and physio, I am very happy to have you all here.”

The Italian also lauded Alexander Zverev for having a good tournament and said the German will definitely clinch a Grand Slam trophy one day. This was Zverev’s third loss in a Major final.

“I would like to start with Sascha. Again a tough day for you, your whole team and family,” Sinner said after consoling Zverev, who was left in tears prior to the trophy presentation. “You have an incredible team behind you and are an amazing player. Keep believing in yourself as all the players and coaches know how strong you are as a player and person. Keep it up and keep working hard as we all believe you can lift one of these very soon.”
