Former World No.1 Boris Becker has shed light on Novak Djokovic’s first round defeat at the Rio Olympics. Becker, who was Djokovic’s coach in 2016, revealed the Serbian was heart broken after his opening round loss against Juan Martin del Potro, who went on to win the Silver Medal.
Djokovic had entered the Rio Olympics on a high in 2016 after winning the Australian Open and Roland Garros. But he could not keep his good show in Brazil’s capital, losing 6-7, 6-7 against the Argentine to be knocked out.
Meanwhile, the 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic will take part in his fifth Olympics in the forthcoming Paris Games. The Serb has won a solitary Olympic medal, a Bronze in 2008 Beijing and since then has failed to finish among the top three players.
“Then he lost to Del Potro in the first round and you couldn’t talk to him for the first few days because he was heartbroken. It was one of the biggest disappointments of his career, but there you have it,” Boris Becker said ( Via Punto de Break).
The German added that the upcoming Olympics will hold a lot of importance for Djokovic given his patriotic love for his country.
“He has so many great wins in his career, but you could see the disappointment. He showed how proud he is to be Serbian. He loves his country more than anything else in the world and that’s why these Olympics will be so important for him,” the German said.
Djokovic is yet to win a single title on the tour in the ongoing season and he will be determined to win the prestigious Gold at the Olympics.
