Spain’s young Tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz had lost against Andy Murray at BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells earlier in the month. The young Spaniard had his chance to avenge his loss in the ongoing Vienna Open. The 18-year old was able to grab his opportunities as he came up with his best against the Scot.
The youngster defeated the veteran player by 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the Erste Bank Open. Alcaraz has taken giant strides at the top level in the recent past and this will certainly add a shot to his arm. The Spanish player was delighted with his performance against Murray.
“For me, it’s a great feeling to play against Andy Murray and to be able to beat him,” Alcaraz said in his post-match interview. “I played really, really well and I’m just really happy for the performance today.”
Alcaraz was able to stamp his authority in the game from the get-go as he broke Murray’s serve in the opening game of the match to put his noses in front.
In fact, Murray took a 4-2 lead in the second set but the youngster bounced back in style and won four games on the trot to take the match in straight sets.
“Indian Wells was the first time that I met Andy Murray on court and now I knew a little bit more [about] Andy Murray, so I just knew his game, how to play,” Alcaraz said. “I was just trying to play aggressive, not let him play his game.”
Earlier, Andy Murray had backed Carlos Alcaraz to become the no.1 player in the ATP Rankings.
“I think Alcaraz is really, really good,” Murray said at the time while talking to ATPTour.com. “I think he’s got a good chance at it.”
Carlos Alcaraz will next face no.3 seed Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinal.
