Swiss great Roger Federer is all set to make his comeback on clay after a long gap of two years as he will participate in the upcoming Madrid Open 2021, which will begin in the first week of May. The legendary player has listed himself for the tournament, which will take place in Spain’s capital Madrid.
Along with Federer, the current World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, No. 2 Daniil Medvedev, and No. 3 Rafael Nadal will also take part in the event. Furthermore, top players like Dominic Thiem, Andrey Rublev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Diego Schwartzman, and Matteo Berrettini will also take part in the tournament.
Federer will be seeded seventh in the tourney and he will aim to be at his best. The Swiss maestro has already revealed that the Tokyo Olympics and the Wimbledon Championship are the top agenda for him in the 2021 season.
In fact, Federer has sweet memories of playing in Madrid as he has bagged the title on three occasions. Furthermore, one of those three titles came against his arch-rival Rafael Nadal back in the 2009 Madrid final.
Meanwhile, Roger Federer made the much-awaited return to the game after undergoing two knee surgeries in 2020. Thus, the former World No. 1 made a comeback after a long gap of 13 months.
Federer participated in the Qatar Open but as expected he looked a bit rusty. The flamboyant player was able to win his second-round match against British player Daniel Evans. But his journey ended against the eventual winner of the tournament, Nikoloz Basilashvili. The Georgian player defeated Federer by 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.
Federer will aim to make a solid comeback on clay and also prepare himself gear up for his favourite grass season. The Madrid Open 2021 will run from May 2 to May 9.
