Australia’s swashbuckling batter Travis Head revealed his batting plans against India’s gun fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah after scoring a majestic century on the second day of the third Test match at the Gabba, Brisbane on Sunday.
Head joined forces with Steve Smith when Australia were in a spot of bother at 75-3, with Bumrah striking twice early on the second day. The left-hander revealed his plan was to be proactive against Bumrah as the pacer has got all the arrows in his quiver.
Head went on to score 152 runs off just 160 balls before he was dismissed by Bumrah with the second new ball. The southpaw scored his ninth Test century and added 241 runs with Smith, who also scored a fine knock of 101 runs. This was Head’s third Test century against India as he continued his love affair against the Indians.
Speaking to Mark Nicholas and Matthew Hayden, Head after the day’s play on Channel 7, “He goes for the base of the stumps early. But I think it’s about reacting. He has a good bouncer. He’s got brilliant wicket-taking balls, for me it is about being positive against him. Doesn’t mean that I need to score runs against him, but more about being proactive with my forward defense.”
Head was also delighted for Steve Smith, who ended his run-drought with his 33rd Test century. The South Australia added that Smith was moving really well and showered praise on his teammate.
“I’ve always enjoyed that about Steve. I’ve felt that when he’s in the zone and batting well, I go unnoticed. I thought he was moving really well. I didn’t feel I would lose my partner at the other end, so that gives me some (freedom) too.”
Australia ended the second day’s play at 405-7 with Alex Carey (45*) and Mitchell Starc (7*) unbeaten at the crease.
