Hardik Singh Balances Rehab and High-Tempo Hockey in HIL Amid Shoulder Injury

Indian hockey star Hardik Singh, a pivotal figure in India’s back-to-back Olympic bronze medal triumphs in Tokyo and Paris, is navigating the challenges of recovery while competing in the Hockey India League (HIL). Despite a lingering shoulder injury sustained during the Paris Olympics, Hardik is determined to lead UP Rudras and maintain his form in the high-stakes tournament.

The 26-year-old midfielder injured his left shoulder in a collision with a Spanish player during the fourth quarter of the Paris Olympic bronze medal match. The setback forced him to miss the Asian Champions Trophy in Hulunbuir, China, and a two-Test series against Germany in Delhi.

“I went through rehab for four months. I played (a test event) with the development team (in Breda, Netherlands). After the Olympics, this is my first high-tempo competition, and it has been going well,” Hardik told Sportstar

However, he acknowledged the ongoing challenges, saying, “There’s still some pain in my shoulder, but I’m managing.”

This isn’t Hardik’s first brush with injury. In the 2023 World Cup, a hamstring issue ruled him out after a Pool match against England. His current injury has made him particularly mindful of balancing workload and recovery.

“When there’s no match, I focus on my therapy and rehab sessions. Every day, I spend half an hour with the physio and one hour for the rehab of my shoulder,” Hardik explained.

Despite the discomfort, Hardik remains committed to playing all 12 matches of the league, including potential semifinal and final appearances. “It’s not so bad. I’ll see how my shoulder responds, but I want to play all 12 matches,” he added.

Under his captaincy, UP Rudras have shown promise, winning their first two games before suffering a loss against Hyderabad Toofans. Hardik has taken the setback in stride, emphasizing the importance of team unity and adaptability.

“It’s easy to point fingers at each other after a defeat. After the first two matches, our players complimented each other for the good work. We’re trying out different combinations. The main job is to qualify for the top four and then give 110 per cent,” he said.

As the HIL progresses, Hardik’s leadership and ability to manage his recovery will be crucial for both UP Rudras’ campaign and his own long-term fitness. For now, the midfielder is focused on delivering consistent performances while ensuring his shoulder heals fully.
