Rafael Nadal former coach Carlos Moya has stated that he won’t be surprised if World number two doesn’t go on to win the ongoing French Open 2020. Nadal, World number one Novak Djokovic and US Open 2020 champion Dominic Thiem are favourites to go all the way in the tournament.
However, Moya, former world number one, feels there are other contenders who have the skills to win the tournament. Meanwhile, Nadal had no issues in cruising to the fourth round of the French Open as he defeated StefanoTravaglia by 6-1,6-4 and 6-0.
On the other hand, the conditions at French Open 2020 are different in this edition of the tourney. The competition is being played in October and rain is expected in Paris. The Wilson balls are used, which are slower than the formerly used balls, Babolat.
Furthermore, Nadal has a difficult route to the final. Nadal is in a tough draw and he might face Dominic Thiem or Alexander Zverev in the semifinals.
Moya said while talking to the ATP Tour, “They (Nadal, Djokovic and Thiem) are the top three favorites, but there are others who are playing well. I don’t think there is a surprise when it comes to seeing a winner here. For me, it would not be a surprise if Tsitsipas, Rublev, or Zverev win the tournament. There are three that are more favorites than the others, but I wouldn’t consider it a major surprise if it happens.”
Meanwhile, Nadal is always a favourite to win at the Roland Garros. The Spaniard, who is the undisputed king of clay, is chasing his 13th French Open title. If Nadal goes all the way, he will also tie with Roger Federer’s tally of 20 Grand Slam titles.
Nadal also won his fourth round game in straight sets against Sebastian Korda by 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2 to book his place in the quarterfinals of the tournament
